Playing with Patterns

“Learn the rules, so you can then break them properly.”

There are so many rules in fashion: DON”T wear pink with red, DON”T wear horizontal stripes, DON’T mix patterns. But then you see the lady walking down the street wearing pink, red, horizontal stripes with mixed patterns….and it looks good!!  The key is knowing how to break the rules properly, and when you master this, YOU will be that IT girl who has everyone wondering how you pulled it off! For this blog we are going to focus on mixing patterns, one of this season’s hottest trends. Unfortunately, this trend can be a bit tricky to master…so let me give you a few tips…

When you mix and match your patterns does it end up looking like this? YIKES!

Mixing and matching patterns is all about balancing the colors, pattern density, and fabric weight. If you have too similar of a color and pattern scheme, it all runs together, causing you to look too overwhelming.

One of the easiest ways to play with patterns is to start out small. Use accessories that have a different pattern than the outfit. For this mannequin, I used a thick striped maxi dress and paired it with a color popping scarf. The Jessica Simpson bag helps keep the outfit neutral, allowing the scarf to pop, which draws the focus to your face.

Stripes tend to work well with almost any other pattern. Especially when the stripes are thicker, they play more of the neutral role. Adding simple pops of patterns is always an easy addition to any outfit!

This tribal print scarf is currently in stock at both stores, and is a great accessory for almost any outfit!

Here are three examples of stripes meshing well with different patterns:
Stripes + Floral
Stripes + Polka Dot
Stripes + Tribal

One of the easiest ways to play with patterns is to mix stripes with floral. Because these two patterns are so different, and have different pattern densities,  they work well together.
Opposites attract!

My favorite way to mix patterns is to play with pattern density. If you have a thick floral patterned skirt, pair it with a toned down floral top. Below I used a thin striped maxi dress with a wider stripe T. Staying within the same pattern family helps balance the outfit out…not too crazy, but still fun!

Pair a bold pattern (the focal point) with a subtle supporting piece. I paired these pants below with a bright, slightly detailed blouse. Mixing these two evens out the intensity, and it gives the outfit an element of texture.

Have fun!
Sometimes the most random patterns will work well together. You never know until you try. When working with bold prints, just try on different contrasting jacket/cardigans. You will be surprised at the random combinations that just happen to be the perfect fit.

Mix patterns from the same color family. Designers Diane Von Furstenburg and Anna Sui are wonderful examples. If you ever need some high-end inspiration, follow these two designers, they are pattern mixing geniuses!

The biggest key to mixing patterns is to just have fun! I encourage you to just start playing with the patterns you have. One of my favorites currently is stripes with leopard...random, but it works! Take the risk when pairing patterns, and I’m sure you will come up with something great!  When you really love the outfit you put together, your confidence will exude...which is what really makes or breaks the outfit!

Have a patterned skirt that needs a fun top? Swing by Again or Again 2 and I will help you find the perfect match. You can also book a style appointment with us! One of our stylists will spend an hour helping you pick out flattering colors, cuts, and brands for your body type! Hope to see you soon!

Prom 2013

Prom is right around the corner, and if you are on the hunt for the perfect dress we have you covered.  Although most looks never go out of style, there are always fresh-cut trends that surface each year with the prom season. So whether you’re a Trend Trail-Blazer or a Vintage Glam Girl we have the perfect dress for you!

For Prom 2013, there are three standout trends; vibrant colors, glitz and glam, and intricate design.  So whether you want shocks of color, shimmering sequins, or lacy designs, you’re sure to impress!

Classic Hollywood
The red carpet and this season's runway gowns are sure to inspire what you wear on your prom night. From Prada to Miley Cyrus to Kendall and Kylie Jenner, vintage Hollywood styles and colors are everywhere. This beautiful dress has an adjustable bodice, so it will fit size small through large.

Prom Princess
Prom is YOUR night to feel like a princess. So why not dress like one?  Want to achieve a romantic look that allows you to radiate power and energy with a sweetheart neck-line, and a pop of color. This is your dress!

Glitz Diva
Get your glitter on! Sparkle and shine with every twist and turn you make. These shimmering sequin dresses will make your entrance the talk of the dance!

Flowing Perfection
This BCBG dress is the perfect combination of an elegant floor length dress and a flirty mini. Sheer is a must for the fashion forward girl, and this dress gives it the perfect touch with the sheer ombre bottom. Fashion forward and fun!

Bright White
Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence have been bringing pure white back to the red carpet.  Keep it from looking bridal by adding black or metallic accents. High-low prom dresses give you the glamour of a long evening gown with the comfort and youthful style of a short dress. This gorgeous formal just might be the perfect addition to your prom night!

Patterned and ready to Party!
Are you the life of the party? Let your personality shine through in this bold printed dress–the hot trend for 2013. Show your wild side and make a bold entrance at prom in this stunning evening dress in a bright geometric print.

Rockin’ Royal
Prom is just one of the events of a girl’s life that she gets to be a queen, so why not dress in the color of royalty? Purple Prom Dresses can add that extra flair of regal elegance to your look.

Intricate Artwork
The right prom print dress lets you stay on the cutting edge of fashion without sacrificing your personal style. These two dresses are bright and bold, but still let you shine through! Whether you opt for abstract patterns, floral prints or something that's decorated with animal-prints, you will love the end result. This trend is not for people who prefer avoiding the limelight, so get ready to shine when you slip into one!

Ruffles Galore!
This dress is classic, yet playful at the same time. The tiers of ruffles add a fun edge that will have you twirling all night!

Short and Sassy
Do you like to get your groove on? A short dress is the one for you! Let these flirty party dresses do the talkin’ while you do the dancin’!

With so many options to choose from, finding a dress that fits your vision and stands out from the rest does not have to be a daunting task. Let us help you get ready for a night you will never forget!

Runway to Realway

Runway to Realway
 (Resale-way!)

Not everyone has the time or even the desire to keep track of the latest looks that are being sent down the runway. Interested or not, what couture and high end designers are putting on the runway will affect what ends up in your closet!  Here is a recap of New York Fashion Week’s top spring looks, and different ways to naturally incorporate them into your wardrobe. Many times the looks on the runway aren’t realistic to wear in everyday life. I will show you how to take it from runway to real way….or even better, how the Again girls take runway to the resale-way

Some trends are everlasting, such as mixes of black and white. This season, designers are stepping it up a notch by using bolder stripes and louder patterns.
****

Chanel used a bold color block in their spring couture 2013 line. You can incorporate this look into your everyday attire by wearing a sold black dress with a white necklace or scarf.

STRIPES are also back, bigger than ever! This season, designers such as Marc Jacobs
were sending an extreme stripe down the runway. The striped maxi below dress can be
found at Again 2. Pair the striped dress with a bright scarf for a fresh spring look.

Black and white will forever be a consistent color during fashion week.
Here are some looks from Chanel, Dior, Jason Wu, & DKNY.
Again & Again 2 are full of trendy black and white dresses. Pair them up with a fur vest
and heels for a night out, or sandals and a headband for a more casual day out.

One of my favorite trends this season is bright bold colors. Marc by Marc Jacob’s
entire collection was showcasing this new trend at New York Fashion Week:

Bright & Bold Forever 21, Anthropologie, & Material Girl dresses
seen below, can be found at Again and Again 2.

This Missoni for Target Coat can be found at Again 2.

Alexis Mabille Spring Couture 2013 line was full of lace and frills.
Another brand that is known for its flowy & frilly pieces is Free People,
which is shown on middle model below.
(Again 2 currently has quite the selection of Free People on the racks)

One of the strongest looks this season is metallic. Shown below is a look from
Marc Jacobs’s collection along with a metallic dress and accessories found at Again2.

As spring rolls around, light and lacey fabrics take over the runway. Christian Dior
had a soft and delicate line this season which can be
duplicated with this lace dress from Forever 21.
(Found at Again2)

Keeping up with the trends doesn’t always have to take a chunk out of your wallet. There are so many different ways to mix and match pieces you already have with an item or two to keep your wardrobe looking fresh. Both stores are full of fun spring pieces to mix into your clothing. Come into Again Consignment or Again 2 to have one of our Again Girl’s style you for spring 2013!
